Enjoy a game of croquet at Kelburn

Hire our facilities for your summer event

Corporate groups and organisations are welcome to hire our facilities to play social croquet during the summer season from September to April.

You provide the people and the catering, and we provide all facilities and equipment, plus skilled croquet players to help your group enjoy a few games.

Our beautiful club is surrounded by trees, and is just a 10-minute walk from Wellington’s CBD. There’s a clubhouse with kitchen, indoor seating, and toilets, five croquet lawns, and parking on the premises and nearby.

Protecting ourselves from Covid

Members and guests are encouraged to protect themselves from covid through vaccination and wearing masks.

Hireage rates

Hireage rates are based on number of people in your party, the expected duration of the event, and whether or not the required date attracts the peak minimum charge for Thursdays and Fridays from mid-November to Christmas.

There is an additional fee for opening the club for early access by caterers.

See the full rates on the KMCC facilities hire form (under heading "Hire application forms" at top right of this page if you are looking at the screen in landscape format, bottom of page in a portrait format).  Indicative costs are at the bottom of this section of text.

Playing croquet

Up to 40 people at a time, playing as teams of two, can enjoy a fun competition on our five lawns. Games will probably last around 20 minutes, so you can have two or three games - or more - in an afternoon.

We will show newcomers how the game is played, how to hit the ball with the croquet mallet, and the basic strategy.

All you need is flat shoes (trainers are okay), comfortable clothing, hats, sunnies, and sunscreen.

We have plenty of mallets for you to use.

It is helpful to have a nominated leader of your group, and perhaps even some idea of who’s playing with who in teams, when you arrive so that play can start without delay. We can help you do a draw for a  fun competition if you wish.

Getting to the club

You can get to the club by bus, cable car (get out at the Salamanca Road stop) or car. The club is about a 15-minute walk from the CBD.

There is room for approximately 15 cars in the grounds and two-hour parking on the street outside.

Catering

We have a kitchen with a medium-sized fridge, microwave, hot plates and double oven. There is also a portable large gas BBQ with a gas bottle. Visitors will need to make their own catering arrangements. Please ensure the kitchen and clubhouse are left clean and tidy. All rubbish must be removed from the premises and grounds. Please bring rubbish bags to take away your own rubbish.

If you hire caterers who need early access to the club before your event starts, there is a fee for opening early.

Liquor/alcohol

Our club does not sell or provide alcohol. Our clubhouse and premises will be closed for your exclusive use during your event. Hirers must provide all their own refreshments including alcohol, and be responsible for all legal requirements and care for participants.

Cancellations

The club facilities are primarily for playing croquet. Therefore the club will cancel in the event of heavy persistent rain and/or the lawns are flooded. The deposit will be refunded in full if the club decides that the weather is unsuitable for play and the event is unable to proceed.

If a hirer cancels a booking 14 days or more before the booked date, the deposit will be refunded in full. If a hirer cancels in 13 days or less before the booked date, the deposit will not be refunded but may be transferred to a booking for another date.

A deposit payment is required

To secure the booking a deposit of 50% of the projected hire cost must accompany the Hire request form. The balance is to be paid on the day or by the 30th of the month following the event.  An invoice will be sent. The Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club does not accept credit card payments and is not GST registered.

Other conditions of hire

  • All players are to wear trainers or other flat-soled shoes (i.e. no heels). Socks or bare feet are also acceptable.

  • No glass, bottles or crockery are to be taken onto the lawns.

  • No loud music please - this is a residential area.
