From the President

Dear All,

The raging storms of the last few weeks have eased at last. The summer season is upon us. In between the winter closing and the first day of the summer season, we have a morning working bee on Saturday 27 August starting at 9.30 am. We will have a list of jobs drawn up by the committee for us all to do.

It will be great to see the summer-only members again at the working bee on 27 August, or from 3 September. Welcome back!

Then of course we celebrate the official opening of the season on Saturday 10 September with drinks at 12.00 pm and a shared lunch at 12.30 pm. This will be followed by running the first hoop by one of our two guests of honour, Dame Susan Devoy and Mayor Andy Foster.

We have four AC players training hard for the Women’s Association Croquet World Championship Singles, to be held in January in Christchurch, and we are expecting a good number of entries for the AC and GC interclub competitions.

Do you have a friend interested in playing croquet? Sunday is a good day to invite some one to have a go with you before bringing them to a club day where they will also get a warm welcome.

Kind regards

Mary Stevens

From the Club Captain

Ann Trotter, ONZM

The club was saddened to hear of the passing of Ann Trotter, and our thoughts are with Judith. A number of club members attended Ann’s funeral service. Ann was a distinguished historian, a much-admired teacher, and the first woman pro vice-chancellor at the University of Otago. Below is a link to her obituary published by Stuff:

Don Reyland

CNZ have just advised that Don Reyland has passed away at the age of 90. He received his CNZ Life Member award last year for his dedication and contribution to the sport over three decades.

A number of you have played in our club Don Reyland competition, and some have represented the club at the WCA play-off.  One of our members, Colin Menzies, won the national final in March 2020; the runner-up was a former Kelburn member now playing for Marlborough.

At the club

Hoops have just been reset.  Many thanks to Alison Robinson, John Stevens, John Corsham, David Robinson and Brian Black for giving up their time to do this.

Our winter season will finish on Tuesday 23 August, while our summer season begins on Saturday 3 September, with the working bee in between on Saturday 27 August as mentioned by Mary.

The GC handicap challenge non-AHS ladder will now continue until 17 September.

Reminder:  Thursday and Saturday GC club days start at 9.30 am over the summer.

The summary of club competitions for the summer season is being updated, as is the club calendar, which will include closing dates for competitions and events elsewhere in the region. Information will be available on our website.

The Players’ Meeting discussed a range of topics, some of which are covered elsewhere in this update, and suggestions from the meeting will be considered by the Committee. There will be a trial of Advantage GC during the summer season.

Interclub

The Wednesday GC Interclub rules have now been finalised, and will shortly be on the WCA website. The three-person team needs to have a combined minimum handicap of 20 when entering, but there will be no upper limit.

Please confirm with me by the end of August if you wish to play in GC interclub. Those interested in playing in AC interclub please contact Marion McInnes.

Summer season

Deadlines for competition entries:

GC AHS handicap ladder: 12 September. You can enter later in the season by letting me know you want to enter, but you will join the ladder at the bottom.

GC Don Reyland handicap singles:  11 October.  Please note that the draw will be done shortly after this date. I will not be following up with people who haven’t entered.

GC rules coaching

Wayne Gair is holding a session on 6th edition of GC rules at Plimmerton from 10 am to 3 pm on 11 September. To register email him wroquet@outlook.com.

Re-registration for the coming year

Thanks to all members who have re-registered for the coming year, using the unique database form link sent last week.

This is a new procedure that will help our compliance with the Privacy Act. We would like all returning members to complete the forms, which include a couple of checkboxes relating to the Privacy Policy and publication of photographs, as agreed at the AGM this year.

Haven't received your form? Please email Lesley Meadows on the club's email address - kelburnmcc@gmail.com

Payment is separate to completing the form and is by online payment direct to the club's account. Again, many of you have already paid your subs for next year. If you haven't paid yet, please be sure to do so before the end of September.

Finally …

The 2022 GC World Championship, held recently in England, was great watching. The winner was 23 year-old American Matthew Essick. See the Croquetnetwork link below for a good write-up on the event and a short YouTube video of Matthew giving “a jump shot masterclass".
